Practice Dialogues - The making of Artistic Research

  • STPLN Malmöhusvägen 5 Malmö Sweden (map)

An evening of conversations on artistic and practice-based research

Join discussions around materials, making, and bodies with 4 pairs of artist/researchers working in different areas: choreography, film, music, ceramics, sculpture and installation.

Guiding questions:

  • What do you do when you walk into the studio?

  • What draws you to the work, again and again?

  • What keeps you interested?

  • Is there a distinction between artistic practice and artistic research?

Each pair will talk for 15 minutes

Pair 1:

  • Marika Hedemyr is a choreographer, immersive artist and artistic researcher, creating augmented and mixed reality performances in public spaces. Currently PostDoc researcher at School of Arts and Communication (K3) and Malmö Research Centre for Imagining and Co-Creating Futures.

  • Emma Bexell is a director, dramaturg and playwright, founder of Bombina Bombast, working with virtual reality, AI and live streaming to explore the borderland of art and social engagement, with a distinctive curiosity about the human condition in digital times and virtual worlds.

Their conversation explores how performance and technology can create spaces for inquiry, experimentation, and public exchange.

Pair 2:

  • Staffan Schmidt holds a PhD in Fine Art and is a Senior Lecturer in Design in Theory and Practice at the School of Art and Communication (K3) at Malmö University. He has taught art history, contemporary art, and art theory in Nordic art academies, and internationally, and participated in exhibitions internationally. His current work focuses primarily on societal transition and degrowth, including the potentials offered by general material (artificial) intelligence.

  • Gunnar Sandin's multimodal working method—in which various media interact—stems from his interest in how intercultural phenomena emerge, such as how language and form travel and transform as they move between cultures. He has held exhibitions in the wider region and internationally. He is emeritus professor in applied aesthetics from the Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Lund University and has published papers in the fields of architectural theory, semiotics and artistic research.

Pair 3:

  • Joshka Wessels is a human geographer, visual anthropologist and award-winning documentary filmmaker, serving as Associate Professor at the School of Arts and Communication at Malmö University. She has directed environmental and human impact documentaries for BBC World and Al Jazeera International and has been working over the past decade with immersive media and 360-filmmaking, both as producer and co-creating researcher. As adjunct professor she is affiliated to the Emerging Technologies Lab at Monash University, Melbourne.

  • Tim Bishop is an artist and spatial audio designer based in Lund. Tim has been working with spatial audio since 2011, across one-to-one performance, audio walks, immersive theatre, VR, 360-filmmaking and multichannel sound installations. Tim has worked with spatial audio design on productions with organisations and artists such as Bombina Bombast, IVAR studios, Karlsson & Ryan, Lund University, Malmö Stadsteater, Helena Fernández-Cavada, Skillinge Teater and more. Tim is also a regular teacher on the Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Master's Programme at Lund University.

Pair 4:

  • Jonas Larsen is an artist and designer at K3, Malmö University. His artistic research focuses on the relationship between form, conflict, documentation, and materiality. He explores how cultural and material memories are shaped and expressed through form and artistic practice.

  • Julia Hackman is a performing artist and director with experience in both institutional and independent theatre, as well as a background in security studies and political theatre. She is currently pursuing a master's degree at Stockholm University of the Arts, where her artistic research project investigates the intersection between security policy and theatre making.

The event is hosted by Artistic research, K3, Malmö University
