Moving Untamed: Symposium on Artistic Research through Embodied Practices

The body, as the means through which we are in the world, is always under a process of becoming. Beyond it's materiality, it constitutes a site of identity and is in relation to others and to sociopolitical and cultural dynamics.

The symposium explores new ways of knowing and creating through the the somatic experience. The body, as the means through which we are in the world, is always under a process of becoming. Beyond it's materiality, it constitutes a site of identity and is in relation to others and to sociopolitical and cultural dynamics. Following embodiment as methodology, the symposium foregrounds lived experience as a way to reconsider dominant narratives, attending to how movement disrupts norms, reorients perception, and reconfigures structures and processes. It aims to provide a space for active participation and exchange, where diverse contributions collectively encourage a rich critical and creative dialogue on artistic research.

Myrto Noa is a somatic therapist and movement researcher from Greece based in Malmö. With an academic background in journalism and cultural studies and experience in dance, she further trained in body psychotherapy and attended several workshops and intensives in somatic practices including Core Awareness, Skinner Releasing Technique, Butoh, Zhineng Qi Gong and the Tamapla art/life process. She holds a PhD from the Technical University of Athens, Greece where she explored the relationship between the body and the environment through the lenses of psychoanalysis and architecture. Her work focuses on the connection between perception and movement and she applies different somatic methodologies in each research project. The event is organised by Myrto Noa in collaboration with STPLN, where she is currently a Lab Member.

The symposium takes place at STPLN, 27–28 June

Open Call

We invite dancers, performers, choreographers, somatic practitioners, and artists who explore movement as a mode of inquiry to share their methodologies and perspectives. The symposium seeks to explore new ways of knowing and creating through somatic practices.

We welcome proposals that engage with, but are not limited to, the following themes:

  • Movement as a way of knowing, thinking, and meaning-making

  • Practice-based and process-oriented approaches

  • Movement and somatic practices grounded in process rather than form

  • Relations between body, space and architecture

  • Interdisciplinary research

We invite formats such as lectures, performative lectures, workshops, performances or other experimental proposals. Following the symposium, a digital collection of the presentations will be developed and shared across academic and artistic contexts in Malmö and internationally. The symposium will take place at STPLN on the 27th and 28th of June, 13.00-17.00 CEST and participation is free of charge

Movement Research Workshop

A 3-part workshop on site specificity through the lenses of psychoanalysis, architecture and somatic practices. How do I experience myself in relation to my surroundings? How does my surroundings interact with my perception? What narratives emerge when I slow down and allow for new choices and uses of space?  Through these questions, we will explore methodologies for embodied, site-specific research, attending to the present moment in relation to the context in which we move. We will work with the notions of grounding, orientation, proximity and distance as entrances to reconsider our sense of identity and our relationship to space.

Each session begins indoors with somatic practices that cultivate grounding, increased awareness, and sensitivity to inner and outer stimuli, supporting a sense of safety through sustained attention to bodily experience. We will then move outdoors, close to STPLN, where we will experiment with different site-responsive movement practices and ways of engaging with the environment. The process will be presented at the Moving Untamed: Symposium on Artistic Research through Embodied Practices.

Participation in all three workshops is recommended, and no prior experience is needed!
